“Sir, kailangan ko mag-remit ng pera agad kasi na-stroke ang father-in-law ko…” (“Sir, I need to remit money right away because my father-in-law has suffered a heart stroke…”)
These are the kind words that led to deceiving the employer of a Filipina domestic worker in London, United Kingdom last Sunday 30th August 2009.
There was no indication or whatever sign that the worker will not come back to the employer’s house anymore on that day. The worker’s husband in the Philippines confirmed to the employer via overseas call the following day that his wife has run away and broke the contract illegally.
Rhona M. Regio (as pictured), from Lucena City, Quezon Province, Philippines, was given by British Consulate in HKSAR the one-year work permit under her employer’s sponsorship last April 2009.
The employer, a building construction professional and also a Filipino, has brought the domestic worker to London last early July 2009 to continue looking after his two children during summer holiday and when the classes in the school start.
While working for the employer and his family for over a year in Hong Kong, the domestic worker was described to be a “one of a kind” due to its good nature and loyalty. These are the factors that the employer considered to decide bringing the domestic worker to the UK apart from the employer’s intention to provide the worker better income for her four children in the Philippines and husband who is working as policeman.
The employer did not realize that the worker was a good hoax and impostor. It was illustrated that the incident was a plan done with accuracy since the worker has managed to move all her things out from the family’s London house without any trace. She even left with one of the children’s mobile phone and owing money with the employer and with some friends in Hong Kong.
While the worker is now illegally working and gone hiding in the UK, all necessary steps to inform respective authorities have been done and eventually the worker can be considered as illegal alien.
Although still very upset and in disbelief that such fellow citizen would do such deception, the employer wishes to bring the important message and lesson learnt to other employers and also to foreign domestic helpers to firstly consider the implications and consequences to their families back home before committing such act.
If you happen to know this domestic worker, please contact us immediately.
